From a complete movie buff to a Filmmaker Karan has come a long way. He is the son of the veteran Indian film maker, Yash Johar- the man behind the Dharma Production banner. Karan's first big break in the Hindi movies came from Aditya Chopra's hit movie 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge'(1995). He was the Assistant Director and co-writer of this movie. He had also played one of Shah Rukh Khan's friends in the movie. Karan made his directional debut in 1998 with 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', a film about two best friends. The film smashed all records at the Box Office and won eight Film Fare awards. After the resounding success of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' his next directorial venture, the
multi-starrer 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie
Gham' (2001) became almost equally successful and bagged five Filmfare Awards. His other super hit films are '
Kal Ho Na Ho' ( 2003) directed by Nikhil Adwani, which he produced and wrote the script and
'Kaal' (producer) in 2005. A close friend of Shahrukh Khan, he found success working with him. Besides direction, production and writing scripts, Karan has hosted a popular talk show 'Koffee with Karan' on Star World, in which he interviewed renowned Bollywood celebrities. After a gap of five years, Karan has returned to the big screen as a director with 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' (2006).
