BRONCHITIS
Bronchitis is an infection of the lung up to the bronchial passages, excluding lung tissue and the alveoli. X-rays are the only way to differentiate bronchitis from pneumonia. The most common organisms are the same ones that cause acute sinusitis and middle ear infections. Examples include Streptococcus pneumonia, H. influenza, and Moraxella. Viruses are also responsible for a significant percentage.
Mild cases require only hydration or symptomatic treatment such as cough syrups may be sufficient. In sever cases of bacterial bronchitis, antibiotics may be warranted. |
