The ancient town of Ossian, situated 65km from Jodhpur
city is a place of archaeological significance. Once a great trading centre,
Ossian surrounded by acres of gold dunes is an in the Thar Desert. It
is the home to numerous peacocks. The dancing of the glittering blue-green
peacocks on the beautiful gold dukes and the sunset point makes the place
very attractive. Legend has it that the town was founded by Utpaladeva,
a Rajput prince of the Pratihara Dynasty and was then known as Ukesha
or Upkeshapur.
Ossian is a land of temples and has a cluster of ruined Brahmanical and
Jain temples belonging to 8th and the 11th centuries. The largest and
the best preserved among them are the Mahavir Jain temple dedicated to
Mahavira, the last of the Jain Thirthankars and Sachchiya Mata temple
dedicated to Goddess Durga (11th-12th century). The early 8th century
Surya temple with beautifully carved pillars has fascinating images of
Durga, Surya and Ganesh and the three Vishnu temples. Apart from its artistic
temples, the Ossian city is also known for its camel rides.
