Gangaur festival, dedicated to Goddess Parvati is celebrated
all over Rajasthan in the month of chaitra (March-April), the first month
of the Hindu calendar. This colourful festival, mainly celebrated by women,
starts with the subsequent day of Holi and continue for a period of fifteen
days. Married women seek the blessings of the goddess for material happiness,
while unmarried girls pray to her, to be blessed with ideal husbands.
During the festive days, ornamented images of goddess Parvati are worshipped
in every home. A colorful procession with the idol Gauri (Parvati) is
also carried out through the streets of Jodhpur. At night ladies apply
Mehandi (Heena) to their palms and soles as an indication of their Sohaag
(happy married life).
