Pachmarhi is situated in Hoshangabad district of Madhya
Pradesh, about 195 km from Bhopal, amidst Mahadeo or Satpura National
Park. This hill station, elevated to a height of 1,067 mts above sea level,
is considered as an archaeological treasure house, well known for its
pre-historic cave shelters with rock paintings of 500-800 AD. Pachmarhi
derived its name from the word 'Panch Marhi' which means five caves. Legend
has it that Pandavas- the epic heroes of Mahabaratha, during their exile
period stayed in these five caves that were carved out of a single hillock.
These caves are believed to be carved by Buddhists in the 9th or 10th
century A.D.
The clean, green and tranquil surroundings, serene forest glades, jamun
groves, deep ponds , cascading waterfalls, lava hills, valley and groves
of wild bamboo, make Pachmarhi an ideal place for the tourists. The place
has several interesting tourist spots and some among them are Jatasankar
cave, Pandava cave, Apsara Vihar (pond), Rajat Prapat waterfall, Rajendra
Giri, Priyadarshini point, Mahadeo caves, Bee falls, Chauragarh etc.
