Baichung Bhutia, Captain of the Indian Football Team is the most recognised face in modern Indian football. Bhutia stormed the football scene as a diminutive 16-year-old, emerging the 'Best Player' in the 1992 Subroto Cup. His scintillating performance at age 19, when he scored his international debut against Uzbekistan in the Nehru Cup 1995 cemented his place in Indian football. Known as the torchbearer of Indian Football and as a player who has scored over 35 goals at the international level, Bhutia was the youngest to captain East Bengal in 1998/99. In 1999, he was bestowed with the Arjuna Award and the Sikkim state award. He moved West-ward, and became the first Asian player to score a goal in an English league while playing for Bury FC (England) in April 2000. He returned to India in 2002 and after a year long stint with Mohun Bagan AC, he is playing currently for East Bengal club, Kolkata. To honour him, the Sikkim government has named a stadium after him. Bhutia hailing from Namchi, Sikkim is married to his longtime girlfriend Madhuri Tipnis.
