Built by the Nawabs of Lucknow, Chattar Manzil
is one of the famous tourist attractions of Lucknow, situated on the right
bank of river Gomti. The construction of this imposing structure
was started by Ghazi-ud-din Haider, the Nawab of Lucknow and after his
death it was completed by his son Nasir-ud-din Haider. The palace is famous
for its unique architectural style. The dome of the palace is surrounded
by a gilt umbrella and so called as Umbrella Palace. It has a marvelous
façade with enormous underground rooms. Though the Chattar Manzil
retains an old world charm, the influence of modern style of European
architecture can also be found in its construction. This amalgamation
of old and modern style of architecture enhances the beauty of the building.
At present the palace has been remodeled and houses the office of the
Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI).
