The 1857 Memorial Museum located inside the Residency
complex is one of the most famous museums in Lucknow. The museum exhibits
the story of the freedom struggle of 1857 in a chronological order. It
houses the model of the Residency, maps, documents, paintings, old photographs
and lithographs of many sites, period objects such as guns, swords, mustering
cannons, shields, rank badges, medals etc.
The museum has two parts, the ground floor with four galleries and basement
with seven galleries. One can reach the ground floor through a large double
columned portico at the southern direction and the small room here is
the entrance to its galleries. One can approach the galleries at the basement
through spiral staircases. The newly added galleries at the basement houses
the artifacts like various terracotta human and animal figurines, terracotta
roof tiles, porcelain wares, fragments of wine bottles, silver plated
whisk fly, a loaded revolver and cannon balls etc, which are recovered
during the excavation in the southern portion of the Residency complex.
The museum opens from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm and closed on Mondays. Entrance
