Koratty Muthy Church

St. Mary's Forane Church at Koratty, most popularly known as Koratty Muthy Church, devoted to Mother Mary is one of the important pilgrimage centres for Christians. The church is located in a beautiful village of Koratty, about 7kms from Chalakudy in Thrissur district and about 15 km from Cochin international airport.

The church was originally constructed during the year 1381. The most popular story behind the creation of the church was related to two landlords. During the 13th century, Kerala was divided into many provinces, which were under the control of landlords. Koratty Kaimal and Kodassery Kartha were two of such landlords. One day, Kavalakkadan Koch Vareeth, the commander of Kaimal's army was killed during a war between the two landlords. Because of the interference of Kodassery Kartha, the burial could not take place at Ambazhakkadu church. During the return procession, the tired pallbearers placed the coffin down. But they were not able to lift it again as the coffin got stuck to the ground. Hearing this, the Koratty Queen donated land for the funeral of the commander and allowed the Christians in Koratty to build a church to satisfy their spiritual needs.

In 1790, Koratty church was attacked during Tipu’s military conquest in Travancore and Kochi kingdoms. Later it was rebuilt with high walls and wide doors in Portuguese style. The present church was established on September 8th, 1987. The main altar of the church consists of wooden frames of 12 apostles. The statue of the sacred heart is placed in the central part. Sculpture of Virgin Mary is positioned above that. Under that, statues of Koratty muthy, sacred heart, St. Rosa and St. Joseph are placed in cases. Church walls are painted with important events of Mother Mary’s life. Image of Mother Mary is beautifully carved on the doors of the church. 

The annual feast of Koratty Mutty is celebrated on the Sunday following the 10th of October. The procession with the statue of Mother Mary accompanied with band, drum beats and adorned umbrella is the main attraction. An important offering here is the poovankula (bunch of plantain).

Another attraction of the church is the Rosary village. Twenty mysteries, starting from Annunciation to Coronation and the mysteries of light are beautifully depicted here. All through the year, especially during the feast days, devotees of all castes and creeds, from far and wide, throng to this place to pay their respect to Koratty Muthy and pray for blessings.
