The air transport is not well established in West Bengal.
Kolkata, the state capital is the head-quarters of the two divisions of Indian Railway. The total railway length of the state is 3,825 km. Kolkata metro is the first underground railway in India and Kolkata is the only state in India, which used Trams as a mode of transport. Alipurduar Railway Junction, Darjeeling, Howrah Station, New Cooch Behar, Rampurhat etc are the few stations of West Bengal.
West Bengal has the road length of nearly 92,023 km and the road density of the state is higher than the national average. Many Govt owned organizations like Kolkata State Transport Corporation, The North Bengal Transport Corporation, The West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation etc and private bus companies operate bus services in the state. Except the Taxi and Auto rickshaw, the Cycle rickshaws and hand-pulled rickshaws are common for short distance travel.
Kolkata is the oldest major port in the country. There is passenger service to Port Blair and cargo service in India and abroad. It has the largest dry dock facilities in India. Port has a comprehensive range of facilities to handle and transport various cargo including heavy lifts.
