Dashashwamedh Ghat, the main bathing ghat located close to Vishwanath
Temple, is associated with Hindu mythology. It is the place where Lord
Brahma is said to have sacrificed ten horses during the Dasa Ashwamedha
yajna to celebrate the return of Lord Shiva on earth. It is said that
bathing here gives the same merits as received by doing the ‘ten
horse sacrifice’ that were performed here. The Ghat was renovated
by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in 1740 AD and later by the Queen of Indore,
the princess Ahilyabai Holkar in 1774. An observatory named Jantar mantar,
built by Maharaja Jai Singh is located near the Dashashwamedh Ghat.
