Bharat Mata temple, the only temple dedicated to Mother India, is situated
at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth campus at a distance of 3 Km from the
city. The temple, built by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt- a follower of Gandhi
was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936. It is in the shape of
pentagonal cone with five pillars supporting the structure. The five pillars
indicates the 5 basic elements of creation namely earth, wind, fire, water
and sky. The houses a marble structure of Bharat Mata dressed in an orange/saffron
saree holding a flag. Instead of the idols of gods and goddesses, Bharat
Mata temple has a large relief map of India, carved out of marble. This
fine three dimensional structure of undivided India is constructed at
the right proportions of oceans, lands and hills. The temple is opened
from 9:30 a.m to 8:00 p.m.
