Jama Masjid alias Jami Masjid , located in the heart of Lucknow is said to be one of the most beautiful mosques in India. Built in 1423 by Sultan Ahmed Shah, this yellow sandstone structure is famous for its intricate style of design and architecture. It is a combination of Hindu and Muslim architecture. The big hall or the western chamber of the structure with 15 arched domes is supported by 260 pillars of different elevations. One can found the tomb of Sultan Ahmed Shah on the Eastern side entrance, which has been beautifully conserved by the concerned authorities. The domes are intricately designed and bejeweled and the pillars, which
are beautifully carved, have drawn inspiration from the Hindu and Jain
culture. The courtyard encloses an area of about 4950 square meters. Interior
walls are beautifully decorated with fine chandeliers, silver pulpits,
gilded mirrors and vibrant frescos in Mughal style and the exterior walls
with exquisite carvings and calligraphy shows the influence of Jain and
Hindu temples. It is an important place of worship for the Muslims in
Lucknow who gathered here from different parts of Uttar Pradesh on every
auspicious occasions. |
