Courtallam (Kuttralam) also known as the 'Spa of the South' is a summer
resort situated at an altitude of about 167 meter in on the Western Ghats
at a distance of 59kms from the city. Sharing the boundary with Thirunelveli
district in Kerala, it is the main tourist destination of Thirunelveli.
The waters of Courtallam is believed to have medicinal qualities as it
flows through a forests of herbs. Offering a picturesque view, Courtallam
consists of nine water falls :
Main Falls (Peraruvi); Small Falls (Chitraruvi); Shenbagadevi falls (not
safe to take bath); Honey Falls (Thenaruvi- It is tedious to reach) ;
Five Falls (Aindharuvi- is the most popular waterfall which separates
into five small waterfalls as it hits the ground); Tiger Falls(Puli Aruvi);
Old Falls (Pazhaya Courtallaruvi); New Falls (Puthu Aruvi); Fruit Garden
Falls (Pazhathotta Aruvi).
The ideal season for viewing the falls is from June to late August during
the monsoon. A guest house and a number of medium range hotels are available
for stay in Courtallam. Near the main water falls, there is the Kutralanathar
Temple dedicated to Lord Siva.
