Tenkasi, the pilgrim centre also known as the Kasi (Varanasi) of the South
situated 53 km north of Thirunelveli, is famous for the Vishwanatha temple
dedicated to Lord Siva. The temple has remarkable sculptures dated to
the end of 17C. 2m high figures of Shiva, dancing Kali, Krishna, Rati
and Bhikshatanamurti are some among others. The flagstaff of the temple
that is believed to be 400 years old, is noteworthy for its sculptural
beauty. Tenkasi was the home of the later Pandya chiefs in the 15C-16C
and later the Madurai Nayakas. The famous Courtrallam waterfalls is located
near to this place. |
