The artificial Kaylana Lake located 9 kms north- west of Jodhpur city on Jaisalmer road is an ideal picnic spot. The lake is also known as Pratap Sagar, as it was built by Pratap Singh, the then Prime Minister of Jodhpur during the year 1872. Earlier, the region adjoining the lake had palaces and gardens of two Jodhpur rulers namely Bhim Singh and Takhat Singh, which were destroyed to build the Kaylana Lake. Spread over 84square kms of land, Kaylana Lake is the main source of water supply to the city, where water comes as far as from Himalaya through Indra Gandhi Canal. Bordered by a beautiful garden, the lake and its surroundings are the home to variety of birds and small animals. Boating facilities in the lake is provided for tourists. Kaylana Lake is an excellent place for bird watching and also offers a breathtaking view of the sunset. As the lake is very deep, swimming is prohibited here. Umed Sagar dam, which spreads over an area of 27 square kilometers built by Maharaja Umed Singh in 1933 and the Dak Bungalow of PHED, the Irrigation department are the nearby attractions. |
