Kite Festival
 

Kite Festival is the most popular event of the city held annually on 14th of January on the eve of Makar Sankranti. People irrespective of all age participate in this festival with great fervor. The festival, celebrated for three days, commences by an inaugural ceremony at the Polo Ground followed by releasing of  kites by the Air Force helicopters from high above the sky. Kite fighting and friendly kite flying competitions are held. It is very amazing to watch different coloured, shapes, designs, figures and sizes of kites, made of paper are flying and fighting on the sky. Some kites are as huge as 1.5km and carry social messages; depict social issues or even caricatures of politicians.

Foreigners also participate in the competition and the winners of both the contest are awarded with prestigious trophies. The festival concluded with the prize distribution ceremony followed by the valedictory function, and a farewell dinner with the Maharaja at the beautiful lawns of the Umaid Bhawan Palace, the royal residence of the Maharaja of Jodhpur. Besides the kite flying, various programmes like kite exhibition, kite flying training sessions, kite making sessions and traditional folk performances are also conducted. Tourists from different parts of the world attend this unique festival to exhibit their kite flying skills.
