Ramtek

Ramtek also known as Ramgiri, located about 50 kms to the northeast of the Nagpur city is considered as one of the holy places of the State of Maharashtra. Several myths and legends are associated with Ramtek and it was believed to be the place where Lord Rama rested while he was in exile. Legend has it that the ashram of the Hindu sage Agastya was located at this place and he was very much disrupted by the demons while doing his religious rites. Lord Rama was distressed to hear about this and took a vow (Tek in local language) to relieve the place from the demons. And hence the place got the name Ramtek which means 'vow of Ram'. It is believed that whoever takes a vow at Ramtek is blessed by the God for its fulfillment.

Covering an area of 1129 sq. miles, Ramtek consists of lush green hillocks, lovely lakes and a number of picturesque ancient temples. The major attractions here are the Rama temple (Ram Dham) which is believed to be more than 600 years old and a Jain temple named Shantinath Atishaya Kshetra with beautiful carvings and sculpture. Ramnavami, birthday of Lord Rama is celebrated at the Rama Temple with great fervor and religious activities. The tourist destination, Khindsi lake is located close to Ramtek. It is at Ramtek that the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa composed his famous work 'Meghdootam'. Kalidas Smarak, a memorial dedicated to the poet can also be seen here.
