Believed to be the biggest and tallest church in Asia, Shrine Basilica of Our lady of Dolours is of 25,000 square feet area. Built in Indo- Gothic style, the church also known as 'Puthan Pally' ( new church) is situated in the heart of the city at a distance of 1km. from the center. Consecrated in the year1940, the church was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica in 1992. The notable feature here is the 260 feet high Bible tower at the rear of the church. Blessed in 2004, this tower depicts the whole life of Jesus and is the first Christian art gallery in Kerala. Visitors get a panoramic view of Thrissur city from the top of the tower. Working hours of the bible tower is from 10 am to 6 pm, from Tuesday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 7.30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The tower remains closed on Mondays.

Apart from the bible tower there are other two bell towers in front of the church each measuring 140 feet. The interior of the church is decorated with fine specimens of mural paintings, images of saints and scenes from the scriptures. The floor of the Church is paved with mosaic bricks and the whole church is gorgeously illuminated with varied varieties of electric lamps. There is a majestic array of 10 alters, adjacent to the main alter which is about 100 feet high. The Septic-cell model cemetery beneath the northern side of the rear of the church, is considered the largest of its kind in India.
