Locally known as Kappakadavu, Kappad is a major tourist destination located
16 km from the city. It is at the Kappad Beach that the first European
from Lisbon, Vasco De Gama landed on 27th of May 1498 along with his 170
men while discovering a sea route to India. This historic event is commemorated
by a little stone monument on the beach . A distinctive feature of the
Kappad beach is the moss covered rock that protrudes into the sea. The
beach, strewn with country fishing boats is ideal for relaxation. It offers
opportunities for sand castle building and other beach activities. Another
attraction here is an 800 year old temple that is located at the rocks
nearby the beach. The ideal time to visit the beach is between September
to February.
