Akshardham (also known as Delhi Akshardham or Swaminarayan Akshardham), located near the banks of yamuna is a massive temple complex built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha spiritual organization. The Akshardham experience is an enlightening journey through India’s glorious art, values and contributions for the progress, happiness and harmony of mankind. Set in a substantial park area the Gandhi memorial itself is quite serene and peaceful. The main entrance of Gandhi Smriti is adorned with a statue of a boy and girl holding a dove in their hands standing on either side, emerging out of the globe. It is the work of the renowned sculptor Sri Ram Sutar, symbolising Gandhiji's universal concern for the poor and the deprived. Inaugurated on 6th November 2005, the inspiring Swaminarayan Akshardham, constructed with modern day architecture, displays millennia of traditional Hindu and Indian culture. The mandir is a fusion of pink stone and pure white marble with 141 ft height, 316 ft width and 256 ft length. The temple complex consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars, a spectacular Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and 20,000 murtis and statues of India’s great sadhus, devotees, acharyas and divine personalities. In the inner sanctum (garbhagruh) of the temple, there is a 11 feet high beautiful and divine statue of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Besides Swaminarayan Akshardham, other added attractions here are : Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temple premises. Cloak room is available to keep these in safe custody.
