Ranchi , the capital of the new state Jharkhand, was once the summer
capital of the state of Bihar, before its division. Also known as the
land of Water falls and lakes, Ranchi is located at a height of 2100
ft above sea level in the heart of the Chotanagpur tribal country. An
agricultural locality, Ranchi derives its name from "archi",
an Oraon/Kurukh word for the farmer's "baton" used while ploughing.
The city, formerly known as Lohardaga, attracts tourists for its proximity
to beautiful waterfalls, lakes, hills and forests. It is a centre for
the study of tribal ways of life and also an important centre
of trade and commerce .Today it is a fast growing city with industries
like Bharat Heavy Engineering Plant and major educational institutes.
