The renowned actress, Nandita Das started acting
with a street theatre group called Jannatya Manch. Holding a Masters
degree in social work, she has worked with various NGOs. The Bengali
dusky beauty, debuted in the film 'Pariniti' (1987) which was made
for television and shot into fame in Indian film industry for her
controversial role as a lesbian in Deepa Mehta's 'Fire'. The reluctant
star, acted in various languages and has received international
accolades for her sensitive performance in Bhaanwar (Santa Monica
Film Festival 2001) and Amar Bhuvan (Cairo Film Festival 2002).
Being extremely selective in her roles, Nandita has consistently
broken the stereotypical image of the Bollywood heroine. She was
a jury member at 2005 Cannes Film Festival. Nandita's passion and
dedication has attracted the attention of artists, critics and film
lovers across the globe.
