Udayon is another block buster from
Bhadran with Mohanlal in a dual role.
The story revolves around 74 year old
Soornad Kunju ( Mohanlal), a settler who built an empire on his own by years of
toil on hilly forest land. A self made man, he is obstinate and even broke laws
in his quest to built up his empire.
He had five children, in two
marriages including Rarichan
(Innocent), Pappoyi (Mohanlal), Itti (Babu) Molly (Sukanya) and an eight year
old son from a second marriage. Kunju wants his sons to be like him, toil on
land and make money. He even gives each of them some acres of land but none of
them was interested in farming. Rarichan wanted to be a clock mechanic, Itti was
interested in politics while Pappoyi who was tough like his father did not have,
or agree with his father's obsession of achieving things by any means. He spend
his time gambling and doing nothing worthwhile.
Kunju has no respect for his children and never understands their problems.
He is not ready to part with his money even to get his daughter married.
Ichamma (Bindu
Panikkar) is Kunju's only sister and she has three sons, Mathan (Kalabhavan
Mani), Thoma (Jagathy) and Pothan (Manoj K.Jayan). They find that Kunju
has cheated Ichamma of five acres of land. When Ichamma demands her
land back, Kunju reuses to give it back to her. This causes a rift in
the family and Ichamma's children is out to get him. The rest of the
story deals with the conflict in the family between Kunju, Ichamma and
their children.
Udayon has heavy dialogues and
action. Music by Ouseppachan are good but some times seem out of place in
context. Cinematography by Ramachandra Babu is good.
Mohanlal as rough and tough Soornad
Kunju, with negative shades gives a wonderful performance. He carries the film
on his shoulders. As the son, the role is nothing new, he has been doing the
same role for the umpteenth time. Manoj K Jayan is good in his role. The rest of
the cast is okay.
Overall it is a must see film for
Mohanlal fans.
