Though not bracingly pleasurable, "Aathi", a remake of the successful
Telugu film 'Athanokkade', is worth watching for its well etched out dialogues,
racy action sequences and Vijay's brisk acting.
"Aathi" is a family revenge-film where a young boy and his
childhood sweet heart, are witness to their happy joint family of father,
mother, grandpa, uncles, aunts being butchered by a group of baddies.
The boy and his cousin are then separated. After they grow up, they take revenge
by eliminating the baddies, without knowing they are related to each
other till the climax !
Aathi (Vijay) is brought up in New Delhi by his foster parents. He
comes to Chennai against his parent's wish to pursue his studies. But
the fact is, he is thirsting for revenge on those who had bumped off
his parents and close relatives of uncles and aunts.
Anjali (Trisha), aided
by her uncle (Nasser) is also a student of the same college. Aathi and
Anjali cross each other on several occasions in the college, and soon
they understand that they both have the same tastes and liking. As time
passes, their relationship advances. Soon Aathi falls in love with Anjali,
as she brings back memories of his childhood sweetheart and cousin who
loved to dance in the rain. Once while performing rites for his dead
family, Aathi recognizes his uncle and learns that Anjali is his own
Uncle's daughter. Together they decide to assassinate the baddies RDX
(Saikumar) and his henchmen. How they accomplish this, forms the rest
of the story.
The movie has suspense and the action sequences are one of the high
points of the film. The best bit of the film was the way the director
Ramana made the most intense scene of the film.
Vijay has done a good job in the acting department and has also tried some funky
hair coloring in the film. Prakash Raj plays a typical cop and Vivek's comedy is
hilarious. Trisha has also given a commendable performance. Malayalam
actor Sai Kumar as the main villain goes over the top. The songs are
also pretty good. No doubt the movie is watchable.
