The movie by editor turned debutant director Onir is a touching tale
of the downfall of a man inflicted with aids.
The story takes place in Goa in the 80's when awareness of the disease
was almost nil and people were wary of the disease. The movie unfolds
as the characters one by one introduce themselves and narrate the life
story of Nikhil. Nikhil was the state swimming champion and the idol
of many and the darling of his family. He was trained by his father
Navin ( Victor Banerjee) who was proud of his son. His happy family
includes his loving mother Anita ( Lilette Dubaey ) and his elder sister
Anamika (Juhi Chawla).
Nikhil
had everything going for him until he gets arrested one day. He is diagnosed
with HIV and put away in a secluded section in a hospital. His world
completely takes a turn with his family and friends abandoning him.
The only people who stands by him are his sister Anu and his friend
cum lover Nigel ( Purab Kohli).
The Director has dealt the theme with utmost sensitivity without going
overboard. The narrative revolves around Nikhil, his disease and its
effect on his relationships. The director brings to light the misconceptions
about the ailment, the ostracism the patients/family suffer and its
effect on them, quite efficiently. One's sexual preferences is put forth
maturely without ridiculing. He has extracted fabulous performances
from the cast. Cinematography by Aravind Kannariban is noteworthy. He
captures the locales as well as emotions effectively. Music by Viveck
Philip is soothing and one or two numbers are really good especially
'Le chale Le chale' by Shan. The Climax is also dealt with beautifully,
with Nikhil coming to terms with his fate.
Sanjay Suri is perfect as Nikhil. He presents the gamut of emotions
felt by his character really well. Another character who excels is Purab
Kohli as Nikhil's special friend. Juhi Chawla's role as his sister is
definitely one of the best in her career. Victor Banerjee and Lilette
Dubey are competent.
Overall a must see film, for the sensitive way it is narrated. We rate
it good.
