Ramesh Sippy’s 'Sholay'
was the highest grosser of the times and the most profitable Hindi
movie ever made. It ran to packed houses continuously for five years
at a cinema in Bombay and several others across India. Even now,
over thirty years after its original release, there are hard core
Sholay fans who will be able to quote each characters dialogue verbatim.
The film changed the face of Bollywood and, arguably, was responsible
for creating the phenomenon that was Bollywood through the late-seventies
up to the early-to-mid-eighties.

Bollywood is into a period of remakes..
the brilliant film Sholay is once again remade by none other than
Ram Gopal Varma. The film titled 'Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag' is just
a rehash of the original in a new format. The movie originally had
the same name, but it was changed due to legal hassles from the
Sippy's. But there are a lot of deviations from the original,
starting from the duration of the movie to
the scenes, characters, venue and the relationship between each of the
characters etc. Situations are different; songs are
different except for 'Mehbooba'. Let’s wait and watch whether
Verma's remake could make a difference at the box office. |
