The Kanpur Memorial Church alias All Soul's Cathedral was built in 1875
A.D to commemorate the courage of the British who died during the War
of Independence (Sepoy Mutiny) in 1857. Designed by the architect Walter
Granville, this impressive edifice in Lombardic Gothic style is made up
of vibrant red bricks adorned in multi colored hues and has fine stained
glass windows. The memorial garden of the mutiny is on the eastern
side which is separated from the main building by a marble gothic screen,
designed by Henry Yule. The center of the memorial is occupied with a
beautifully carved figure of an angel by Baron Carlo Marochetti, representing
the 'symbol of peace'. Originally, the screen and statue were placed in
the Municipal Garden and were transferred to the churchyard in 1948 after
independence. The military cemetery, located on the edge of the cantonment,
has a number of graves from the late 19th century.
