The massive Allahabad Fort, located about 5kms from the Allahabad Railway Station on the banks of the Yamuna near was built by Emperor Akbar in 1583 A.D. It is well known for its unique design, construction and craftsmanship. Now the fort is under the control of the Indian Army and only certain sections of the fort are open for the public. The fort has massive walls and three gateways flanked by high towers. There are a number of palaces inside Allahabad Fort which were once occupied
by the wives of the Emperor. These palaces are 'Zenana' or harem, the
Palace of Mariam-uz-Zamani and the 'Jodhabai Palace'. Other attractions
here are 'Saraswati kund’ which is supposed to be the origin of the mighty
river Saraswati; an underground Patalpuri Temple; 10.6 meter tall Ashoka
pillar with Persian inscription of Mughal Emperor Jahangir; much revered
Akshayavat or 'immortal tree', etc. The fort is open on all days
from 6 am to 5 pm. |
