Government Museum Complex spreading to an area of 16.25 acres is situated at Pantheon road between Egmore and Anna Salai. Previously known as Pantheon Complex in the British period, the museum was established in 1856 and has departments of National History and Art. There is an exquisite collection of more than 2000 Indian bronzes and Amaravathi marbles belonging to the Buddhist period, 2nd century AD. Three great buildings of architectural value - the Museum Theatre, the Extension hall and the Connemara Public Library are in this complex. The present Museum has several sections, altogether 46 galleries in six independent buildings. Four galleries- Hindu sculpture gallery, the Amaravathi gallery, the Bronze gallery and the National art gallery constitute the main attractions. The Museum opens from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m on all days except Fridays and national holidays .
