Indore Museum also known as Central Museum, located near the General Post
Office on Agra-Mumbai Road, provides a deep knowledge about the culture
and history of the people of Indore. Built
in 1929, the museum contains finest artifacts from the prehistoric
to the modern era which are displayed in two galleries. Gallery
I exhibits relics from Western Malwa consisting of stone tools, quartz
sickles, ornaments etc and from Madhya
Pradesh's prehistoric period ranging from 5000 - 4000 BC. Hindu
mythological carvings are exhibited in the II gallery. Besides these,
the museum houses
a fine collection of the 11th and 12th centuries sculptures of Parmar
dynasty from Hinglajgarh . These sculptures have been finely carved in
stone and the finest among them are Harihara, Shiva and Parvati seated
on Nandi, standing Parvati and a damaged Chamunda. Other exhibits in the
museum includes paintings,
bronzes, terracotta, coins , arms, armors and a richly ornamented
doorframe with stunning figures. Entrance to the museum is free and it
is open on all days except Monday from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.
