Situated 44 kms from Bhopal, Raisen is famous for the
ancient Raisan fort on the Bhopal-Sagar road and the Durgah of Raisen.
Believed to be built in the early 6th century atop a hill, the massive
Raisen fort has great historical and architectural importance. Within
the fort complex, there is a temple, mosque, palaces, a large water reservoir
and numerous wells. Till 16th century, Raisen fort was under the control
of the Hindu rulers including Rajputs and in 1543, it was captured by
Sher Shah Suri and later by Nawab of Bhopal in 1760. Upto India's independence
in 1947, the fort was under the control of princely state of Bhopal.
