Matheran literally means 'Mother Forest' or 'Forest on Top' is a charming
hill station located at an altitude of 800 metres (2,625 feet) above in
the Sahyadri Ranges of the Western Ghats. This popular tourist destination
in the Raigad district (about 70kms from Thane and 100kms from Mumbai)
has a number of old colonial bungalows and about 38 designated lookout
points. Lake Charlotte, Mount Barry, Eco point, King George point, Porcupine
point, Panorama Point, Louisa Point, Hart Point, Monkey Point, Alexander
Point, Coronation Point etc are some among the stunning view spots. The
2 hour ride in the toy train from Neral to Matheran will be an unforgettable
experience to the tourists. Horses and Hand pulled Rikshaws are the main
means of transport in Matheran. Best season to visit this place is
from November-February and April-June.
Matheran is also famous for its chikki, a sweetmeat delicacy and chocolate
fudge. The streets are scattered with shops, selling kolhapuri chappals
and leather products like bags, shoes, belts etc and several restaurants
poviding delicious foods.
