Kirtads alias Kerala Institute of Research and Development of Scheduled Tribes and Castes is a unique museum cum tribal study center situated at Chevayur, about 7 km away from the city. The museum houses the tools and devices used by the ancient tribal communities of Kerala. The exhibits includes bows and arrows, carrying and storing baskets, domestic utensils, costumes, ornaments, musical instruments, miniature models and tribal huts with household implement etc. There is an excellent library dedicated to the tribal literature with books on Anthropology and Sociology. The museum also contains a workshop for craft persons, an exhibition hall and a circular-shaped open-air stage with a gallery.
