Aattuvela Mahotsavam renowned for its great processions with caparisoned elephants, fireworks and drum beatings is associated with the Elamkavu Devi Temple at Vadayar. The festival is held usually in the Malayalam month Kumbham (April). The festival is conducted in connection with the annual meeting of Kodungallur Bhagavathi who is supposed to be the elder sister of Elamkavu Bhagavathi. The nearby Attuvelakkadavu Bhagavathi Kshethram also has a significant place in Aattuvela Mahotsavam. The people in the area of these two temples, together conducts the festival.
The attuvela lasts 2 days and during the Attuvela, beautifully decorated canoes, carrying huge replica of the Elankavu temple sail down the Moovattupuzha waters accompanied by a huge number of well decorated small canoes and traditional temple music. It is believed that Kodungallur Bhagavathi comes to Aattuvelakkadavu temple on Aswathy day of Malayalam month Meenam. When she reaches there, her younger sister Elamkavu Bhagavathi also moves towards Aattuvelakkadavu temple in Canoe to receive her elder sister to Elamkavu temple. This marks the beginning of Aattuvela Mahotsavam. The bhagavathi's travel is entirely through the famous river of Moovattupuzha. When the goddesses reaches Vadayar temple, Elamkavu bhagavathy will vacate her sanctum to show respect to her sister and stays in the temporarily separate set sanctum known as 'Palli Srampu'.
On the festive occasion, the temple is traditionally decorated with plantain, coconut leaves, flowers, leaves, traditional lamps and lights for the occasion. Various unique offerings and ceremony namely 'Revathy Pooja', 'Purakkalathil Guruthi', 'Garudan Thookkam' etc. are held at the shrine during the period. The festival ends with Arattu. The utsava murti of the deity is taken out of the shrine for ritual bath and then taken to the sanctum sanctorum.
