St. Thomas Cathedral, located in Pala about 39 Km from Kottayam town, is believed to be the oldest church in Pala. It is the cathedral of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palai. With the invasion of Portuguese, the church went into the custody of the Pope.When the diocese of Palai was erected by the Pope Pius XII on July 25, 1950, it was decided to build a new church and its foundation stone was laid on December 1, 1953. The cathedral was completed and blessed on January 1, 1981. The structure of the church is inspired by the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., USA. The church altar is adorned with a 12 feet high hand carved statue of Christ crucified in Kumbil wood. The important festival of St. Thomas Cathedral is the Rakkulithirunal which is celebrated on 6th January. The festival symbolizes the Biblical account of the three Wiseman from East who left for Bethlehem to adore infant Jesus. Contact Address: |
