Sri Anathesvara Temple is located in the middle of the temple square
very close to Shri Krishna Temple, Udupi. The main deity of the temple
is Lord Vishnu. This place is said to be the origin of the Shaivites.
The temple is surrounded by the eight important matts. The architecture
of the temple is very attractive. Its sanctuary and adjoining columned
hall are surrounded by a walled passageway, the latter covered with sloping
stone slabs. The rear panel made of wood, shows a 'linga' flanked by elephants,
guardians, peacocks and lotuses.A stone altar with a finely sculpted base
is located immediately outside the east entrance to the Temple. It is
said that Madhvacharya narrated his famous Aitareya Upanishad at
this temple. The famous Chandramauleshwara temple is located in front
of this temple.
