Birds, a creature with an extremely long ancestry evolved
more than 150 million years ago. They are characterised by the presence
of feathers and wings, which they use for flight, insulation, camouflage,
and for attracting mates. Nearly all birds can fly, and even the flightless
one like the ostrich and penguins evolved from flying ancestors. They
are found worldwide in many habitats. Their ability to fly, has played
a major part in their spread throughout the globe.
There are over 9,000 different kinds of birds, with
a great diversity of size, form, colour, and behaviour. They can fly over
some of the highest mountains on earth as well as both of the earth’s
poles, dive through water to depths of more than 250 m (850 ft), and occupy
habitats with the most extreme climates on the planet. Birds contribute
to nature in many ways. They help to control disease spreading insect
population and help propagation of plants by spreading the seeds of many
plants. Birds and their eggs are also important sources of prey for several
kinds of predators and man. Birds have a close relationship with humans
as pets, as objects of beauty and wonder, as symbols of peace, wisdom
and vanity. As pets, they are entertaining, affectionate and offers a
great deal of companionship. |
