Deepak Dev, a music director who has made an impression with his fabulous
music score in Malayalam films is a perfectionist in sound quality.
He has brought about a new trend to Malayalam music with his crystal
clear sounds. His super hits stand testimony to his immense talent.
Deepak Dev a native of Tellicherry in Kerala , grew up in Dubai. He
studied at the Indian High School there and was learning Carnatic music
ever since his childhood days. Later his interest switched mainly to
the keyboard. He started working with reputed musicians like A.R Rehman,
Anu Malik, Sandeep Chowta, Vidyasagar and M.M. Kreem. He started his
career in Malayalam movies with ‘Chronic Bachelor’ directed by Siddique
(of Siddique-Lal fame). Deepak says that director Siddique was the reason
why he came into movies. They wanted him to render some filler music
in between the programs, when he was asked to join the group for their
shows in the US. Eventually it was those tunes that prompted Siddique
to offer him the film, `Chronic Bachelor'. It was his first film as
an independent music director. After which he has proved that, for him,
creating hit numbers is almost a habit.
His second film was ‘Symphony’ which was directed by I.V Sasi. In
this movie, there is a beautiful song called ‘Pannimathiyey Punarum’
which is sung by Chitra and Yesudas. This song has very little orchestration
but stands out for the melodious voices of the singers. After which
he scored music for Rosshan Andrrews’ movie, ‘Udayananu Tharam’ which
was scripted by Sreenivasan, the actor-script writer. The music received
a fabulous response from the people for its melodious songs. One song
in particular, ‘Karale’, which had a rock and roll flavor to it, went
on to be a huge hit. The other movies that he’s scored music for are
‘Naran’, ‘Ben Johnson’, `Lion,' `Rashtram,' and `Yes Your Honour.' Deepak
is currently busy with two albums - a Hindi album, with Vinod Varma,
and an Indo-Arabic fusion album. He’s made some rapid strides in the
last few years as a music director and seems to know exactly what the
audience wants.
A household name now, Deepak Dev's celebrity status reached new heights
after he appeared as part of a three member jury in a music-based talent
hunt program called ‘Super Star,' which was being aired by a TV station.
The other judges for this show are Alphnos Joseph and Balabhaskar, music
directors in the Malayalam industry. He was on a roll with the channel's
next program, ‘Super Star Junior' as well. He’s married to Smitha, his
junior in college and the couple now live in Cochin with their two daughters,
Devika and Pallavi.
