Home Blood Glucose Monitoring
This
test is done using a portable blood glucose meter to measure the blood sugar levels
for people who already have diabetes. This test can be done at home on a regular
basis. Ideally people with diabetes need to check the amount of sugar at least
once a day and those who take insulin, several times a day. This is possible by
monitoring blood glucose using a home blood glucose meter.
You will
need a blood glucose meter, testing strips, lancets or short needles, lancet device
(to hold the needle) and clean cotton strips for the test. Some monitors have
data management systems that can store past glucose readings which help to calculate
average glucose levels at certain times of day.
How it is done:
Wash your hands and prick your finger with a small needle. Place the drop
of blood collected on a test strip of the blood glucose meter. After a few seconds,
the meter will give a reading of blood glucose level.
Home
monitoring helps to keep your blood sugar levels with in a safe range. Regular
testing is useful to prevent problems arising due to very high or low blood sugar
level thus prevent emergency situations from developing. It is also used to determine
the initial insulin dose and schedule and also to adjust the insulin doses or
schedule according to your daily routine.
