Ariyankulam
Bird Sanctuary
Ariyankulam bird sanctuary located 13 kms east of Tirunelveli is a perfect place
for the adventure lovers and trekkers. One can enjoy the nature walking through
the interesting and exciting locales of the region. Around 35 species of birds
like Spot-bill Ducks, White Ibis, Egrets, Herons, Minivets, Flycatchers, Kingfishers,
Partridges, Painted Storks etc can be found here.
Vallanadu
Black Buck Sanctuary
Vallanadu blackbuck sanctuary is an isolated hillock with scrub forest in Toothukudi
district situated on eastern side of Tirunelveli – Tuticorin highway at a distance
of 16kms from the town. Spread over an area of 16.41square kms, the place is
always having a normal cool climate because of its large number of trees
and plants . Nearly 100 species of birds can be found here and the sanctuary
is home to innumerable animals, birds and other wild creatures. Some of them
are black buck, spotted deer, macaques, jungle cat, mongoose, black naped hares,
common quails, hornde owl etc.
Around 22kms northwest of Thoothukudi at Ottapidaram, there
is a peacock farm called as Mayura Thottam having an area of 55 acres. Every
year during the breeding season, large number of migratory birds visit this
place.
Kunthakulam
Bird Sanctuary
Kunthakulam, a small and beautiful village surrounded by natural forests and
ponds is situated about 33kms south of Tirunelveli in Nanguneri taluk. It is
famous of Kunthakulam bird sanctuary, an idyllic tourist destination for the
bird watchers and the nature lovers. During the season from January to April,
more than 10,000 of migratory birds visit here for procreation from various
countries like Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, USA and Australia. Painted Storks,
Pelicans, Cormorants, Spot-bill Ducks, White Ibis, Egrets, Herons, Minivets,
Flycatchers, Partridges, Quails etc are some of the species of the birds that
can be spotted here.
Kalakkadu
- Mundanthurai Sanctuary
Sprawls over an area of 223 Sq.Kms from Papanasam hills to Kalkad, Kalakkadu
Sanctuary is a tiger reserve center located at a distance of 47kms from Tirunelveli.
The sanctuary is placed in the picturesque and geographically rich surroundings
of Western Ghats. Some of the wild life seen in this sanctuary are common Langur,
Nilgiri Tahr, Sambar, Sloth, Bear, Gour, Elephant, Tiger, Flying Squirrel, Panther,
Wild Dog etc. Besides these, a wide range of birds and reptiles can also be
seen. Egrets, herons, jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridge, quails, emerald dove,
minivets, bee caters, night jars, paradise flay catchers, large racket-tailed
dronge, spotted babbler are some among them. Best season to visit the sanctuary
is from September to March.
Mundanthurai Sanctuary located adjacent to
the kalakkadu Santuary covers a vast area of around 567.38sq.kms and rich in
natural cover that comprises of tropical forests, dry deciduous forests and
moist evergreen forests etc. It is a home to animals like sloth bear, sambhar,
brown palm civet, tiger, slender loris, brown mongoose, wild dog, langurs etc.
The ideal time to visit this sanctuary is from October to January.
Both the sanctuaries at Kalakkad and Mundanthura has developed
as a National Tiger Reserve Center from the year 1988 with a total area
of 817 sq. km in the south most western ghat ranges. The sanctuaries are
opened from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Trekking is allowed with the prior permission from
the officials of Forest (Wildlife) Department. Accommodation facilities are
available at Forest Rest House at Kakkad and Mundanthurai and PWD Rest House
at Ambasamudram with catering services.
