Fairs & Festivals - Kodaivizha | Car Festival | Adi Thapasu Festival | Skanda Sashti Festival

Kodaivizha
Kodaivizha also known as Kodal, is the famous festival celebrated in Tirunelveli which is intended for the propitiation of village deities. This festival usually commence in the Tamil month of thai, i.e after 15th January.

Car Festival
Car festival is the famous festival celebrated at Kanthimathi Nellaiyappar temple which is at a distance of 2kms from the Tirunelveli railway station. Also known an 'Aani festival', this festival that falls during the month of June-July, is celebrated for 10 days with great splendor and cheer. The festival commence with the flag hoisting and on the 9th day a grand procession with the idols of Swamy Nellaiyppar and Gandhimathi Ambal is carried out. The chariot used for the procession is the 3rd largest car in Tamil Nadu and is 450 ton in weight, 28 feet in width, 28 feet in length with a total height of 35 feet. This chariot with the idols are pulled by the devotees through the all four car streets around the temple.

Adi Thapasu Festival
Adi Thapasu Festivel is the main festival of Sankaranainarkoil alias Sankarankoil (56kms from Tirunelveli) celebrated in the month of Adi (June-August) on Uthirada day The festival which attracts a large number of people lasts for 12 days. Sankaranainarkoil is dedicated to Lord Sankaranarayana, a combination of Shiva and Vishnu. It is believed that on this day that Lord Shiva gave his darshan as Sankaranarayanaswamy to Sri Gomathi Ambal at the time of her meditation to signify that God Shiva and God Vishnu are same.

Skanda Sashti Festival
Skanda Sashti festival is the famous festival celebrated in the Tiruchendur Subramanya temple (48km east of Tirunelveli) to commemorate the victory of the Lord over the demon. This festival which lasts for six days is celebrated during the Tamil month Aippasi (October-November). On the last day of the festival the epic story of "Surasamhara" in all its true form is performed.
