Shopping Centers- Prithu Mandapam Market | Cottage Arts Emporium

Considered as a textile center, Madurai is famous for its cotton fabrics and batiks. Majority of the streets in the city are lined up with textiles, readymade garments and jewellery shops. It is an ideal place to buy traditional crafts of Tamil Nadu. The major shopping areas like the Chithirai street, Avanimoola, Prithumandapam, Masi streets and Thevangu Chetty Choultry are located around the Meenakshi Temple. Hajeemoosa Textiles is one of the famous textile shops in Madurai for buying Madurai silk and handloom sarees. There are also Handicrafts Emporiums which offer different variety of handicrafts from various parts of India. The shopping centers are always crowded, especially during weekends and festivals.

Prithu Mandapam Market
The Prithu Mandapam Market is an old pillared hall located inside the eastern entrance of the Madurai Meenakshi Temple. It is the best place in the city for purchasing cotton fabrics. The market is full of shops dealing with handicrafts, textiles and metallurgical articles. The skilled tailors at the textile center, reproduce garments from cotton and printed fabrics within a couple of hours. A government handicraft emporium is also found here which offers handicrafts from all over India. After shopping, one can relax at the Pottramarai tank located at the back of the market. 

Cottage Arts Emporium 
Cottage Arts Emporium (CAE), located at the North Chithirai Street in Madurai, presents a vast range of artistic items. Articles made of wood, metal, stone, glass and cloth are available here. The main attraction of the emporium is the painted furniture from the desert artisans of Rajasthan, Scintillating Jharokas, carved doors and wooden chests with brass trimmings. All objects in CAE are created according to the creative trends in textiles (cloths), style of appearance (pattern), the beauty of Indian jewelry (ornaments) and to the decorative arts of the past. The emporium also features a fine collection of ornaments such as necklaces, bracelets, broaches, chokers and pendants. Kashmiri Shawls and Jamavars from all over the world are also displayed here.
