Konni (Elephant
Training Center)
The hilly area of Konni, located 11 km from Pathanamthitta, is the gate-way
to the forest bordering the district. Surrounded by acres of thick forest, it
is an adventurous tourist spot where one can go for thrilling elephant safaris
and trekking. Konni has the largest number of wild elephants in the state and
is a major elephant training center. In the past, wild elephants caught from
the forests were brought here and put in wooden cages known as 'anakoodu' (Elephant
Cage) till they were properly trained. After 1972, elephant hunting was stopped
since the central government put an end to this crude old method of elephant
catching and training. But the cage was preserved and it attracts hundreds of
tourists. Made of kambakam wood, anakoodu can accommodate 3- 4 elephants at
a time. Now it is home to elephants that were found alone at the AchanKovil
river. Konni is also an agricultural area rich in cash crops like rubber, pepper,
coffee, ginger etc.
Kattathipara
Kattathipara, located in a small rural inlet namely Kokkathodu is located
a few kilometres away from Konni which is about 11 km away from Pathanamthitta.
What make its place attractive is its gigantic rocks and the triple-echo phenomenon.
The huge array of rocks narrates the story of a hunter and his mistress, and
attracts hordes of tourists. The place also offers trekking facilities for the
adventure lovers.
Muloor Smarakam
Muloor Smarakam at Elavumthitta, located 12 Kms away from Pathanamthitta,
is a memorial to Muloor S.Padmanabha Panicker (1869-1931) , one of the well-known
poet and an important social reformer of the century. His home at Elavumthitta
is also preserved as a monument by the Department of Culture of the State Government.
Aranmula
Aranmula,
a small village on the shores of river Pamba is located 16kms from Pathanamthitta
and 10km from Chenganoor on the Thiruvanthapuram-Kottayam route. The place is
famous for the metal mirror known as 'aranmula kannadi', Sree Parthasarathi
temple, its annual Aranmula Uthrittathi Snake boat race (Pampa Palliyodam race)
and a cultural centre named Vijnana Kala Vedi. Aranmula was declared a
Heritage village by the central government, and a Heritage museum and a reference
library has been set up here.
Aranmula Kannadi noted for its secretive
construction, is a unique craft work which is not found anywhere else in the
world. Made of bell metal instead of glass, the techniques of making this
mirror is passed through generations to the traditional craftsmen of the region.
The manufacturing of this metal mirror started as early as the eighteenth century.
Believed to be the mirror of Goddess Parvathy, it is thought to bring luck,
wealth and prosperity to those who keep it. An alloy of copper and white lead
is mixed in a particular ratio to make this non-refractive mirror.
Kozhancherry
Kozhencherry , one among the 5 taluks of Pathanamthitta district, is
situated 12 Kms away from Pathanamthitta town on the left banks of the river
Pampa. This fast developing town is a major trading centre and a booming market
for agricultural goods. More than half of its area is covered by forests. The
famous religious gathering of Christians, Maramon Convention is held at Maramon
near Kozhencherry.
Mannadi
Located 13 km from Adoor (20kms from Pathanamthitta), Mannadi is the
place where the renowned freedom fighter of Travancore, Veluthampi Dalawa spent
his last days. He became a martyr on march 29, 1809. The Govt. of Kerala acquired
1 acre and 27 cents of land here, and built a monument in memory of Veluthampi
Dalawa. There is also a statue of the great Diwan here.
Another attraction in Mannadi is the ancient Bhagavathy Temple
which has some exquisite stone sculptures. The annual festival of this temple
Ushabali is held in February/March, during the Malayalam month Kumbam. The Kerala
Institute of Folklore and Folk Arts also functions here.
Ranni
Ranni alias the queen of hill lands is one of the most beautiful villages
blessed with beautiful nature, rivers, hills, forests, good climate and atmosphere.
This fast developing tourist place, situated in a high range about 14 km from
Pathanamthitta and 66 km away from Sabarimala, is the center for wealth, culture,
politics, pilgrimage, religions and more. The Pampa river flows through Ranni
and several ancient temples and churches dates back to 15th century AD are located
here. Punalur - Muvattupuzha State Highway road is the major road passing through
Ranni.

Pandalam
The holy town of Pandalam, perhaps second only to Sabarimala in sanctity
and significance, is situated 15km from Pathanamthitta. According to legends
it is at Pandalam that Lord Ayyappa, the presiding deity of Sabarimala had his
human birth as the son of the Raja of Pandalam. The Valiyakoikal Temple, believed
to be constructed by the Pandalam Raja, on the banks of river Achenkovil has
been modelled on the Sabarimala shrine. Pilgrims usually stop here to worship
before proceeding to Sabarimala. Three days prior to the 'Makaravilaku' festival,
the sacred ornaments of Sree Ayyappa are taken in a procession from Pandalam
to Sabarimala.
Pandalam is also well known for its educational and health
care centres. It has a lot of educational institutions ranging from reputed
schools to Post Graduate, Ayurveda, Medical and Engineering Colleges.
Seethathode
Seethathode is a village situated about 20 km from Pathanamthitta district.
A large part of the village is covered with forests which comes under the authority
of Ranni Forest Division. The power generating station of Kerala State Electricity
Board called Kakkad Power House is located at Seethathode. Moozhiyar dam is
the nearby attraction.
Kakki Reservoir
Kakki reservoir located about 20kms away from Pathananmthitta is a
tourists delight. There is an artificial lake surrounded by forests which abounds
in elephants, deer and monkey. The splendid lake offers exciting boating experience.
Pamba
The
sand shore of Pamba, at a distance of about 60kms from Pathanamthitta town,
on the banks of the Pampa River is the main halting point on the way to the
famous Hindu pilgrim center, Sabarimala. Also known as Thriveni Sangamam - the
meeting point of three rivers - Pamba, Achankovil and Manimala rivers, Pamba
is the most important holy spot on the way to Sannidhanam. It is near this river
that King Rajasekara had a vision of Lord Ayyappa. Considered as sacred as the
river Ganges, the water in the Pamba river is said to purify one from curse
and evils. So it is considered auspicious for all pilgrims to take a dip in
the river before and after trekking the Sabarimala. 'Pitrutarpanam' i.e paying
homage to the forefathers is also held here.
