Jayachamarajendra Museum & Art Gallery
Jaganmohan Palace built in 1861 by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar located at
around a 10 minutes walk from the city bus stand, encloses the Jayachamarajendra
Museum and art gallery. It houses a collection of antiques acquired by the royal
family over the years. There are
portraits of the royal family in all their ceremonial regalia as well as Indian
miniature paintings including paintings by renowned artists like Raja Ravi Varma
and Nicholas Roerich. Curios in Ivory, sandal wood, ceramics and stone
including Japanese porcelain and English glass, traditional musical
instruments, antique furniture and carvings from China are also on display.
The ground floor is dedicated to portraits and
murals that depict the genealogy of the Mysore kings and princes including detailed
paintings of royal weddings and the annual Dasara procession.
The gallery is open daily from 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
Entry fee - Rs.15.
Railway Museum
The
Railway museum, situated opposite to the CFT Research Institute on Krishnaraja
Sagar Road, contains exhibits from the Mysore State Railways that operated between
1881-1951. Set up in 1979, the museum sets a good pattern for regional display
and has a good collection. Among the exhibits are steam engines, signals and
a Maharani's saloon, with all facilities built in 1899. The highlight here is
the Chamundi Gallery that showcases a unique and interesting collection of photographs
and paintings depicting the development of the railways. It's fun cum learn
museum for children.
Timings : 10.00 am to 01.00 pm and 03.00 pm to 08.00 pm.
Folklore Museum
Founded in 1968, the folklore museum has
a spectacular collection of more than 6,500 unique folklore exhibits from
all over Karnataka. Located in the imposing Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion in the
Mysore University campus at Manasagangotri, the museum is one of the biggest of
its kind in Asia. The exhibits include temple chariots,
wooden images from Mekkekatte, religious objects
belonging to Soliga tribe, carved wooden figures from Karnataka’s villages,
ornamental wooden altar, rural costumes, decorative masks, folk musical
instruments, ceremonial headwear etc.
