Visveswaraiah Industrial and Technological
Museum
The museum dedicated to the memory of Sir. M. Visveswaraiah,
one of the architects of modern Karnataka, is a wonder land of information on
science and technology. Established in 1962 on Kasturba Road , the museum displays
an airplane and steam engine in its compound and houses various technological
gadgets, working model and diagrams.
Each gallery in the museum is dedicated to a particular aspect
of technology and these includes an Engine hall, Electronic Technology Gallery,
Kimbe Paper Metals Gallery, Popular Science Gallery and Children's Science Gallery.
One of the specialties of the museum is the mobile science exhibition that contains
diverse information on the contribution of science and technology to human welfare
and industrial development. Seminars, demonstrations and film shows on scientific
subjects are organized periodically. One can visit the museum on all days from
10am to 5.30pm except Mondays .
Government Museum
The Government museum, one of the oldest museum in India, is situated at
Kasturba Gandhi Road near Cubbon park. The original block was designed and built
by Colonel Sankey in 1876 and in later years several wings have been added to
it. Opened to public in 1886, it contains 18 galleries including Neolithic findings
from the Chandravalli excavations and from the Indus valley, especially Mohanjedaro
antiquities. As the museum displays a huge collection of archeological artifacts,
it is also known as State Archeological Museum. The museum also houses a unique
collection of scuptures, inscriptions, paintings, icons, antique jewellery,
textiles, coins, miniature paintings etc. Opens to public from 10 am to 5pm
except Wednesdays.

Venkatappa Art Gallery
Venkatappa Art Gallery situated adjacent to the Government museum is named after
the renowned artist K. Venkatappa. The gallery which exhibits about 600 paintings,
sculptures and wood carvings is a pleasant treat for the art lovers. Works of
artists like M. F. Hussain, Vasudev, Hanumaiah, Hariram, Rekha Rao etc are displayed
here.
Government Aquarium
The octagonal-shaped government aquarium situated at the entrance of the
Cubbon Park is the second largest of its kind in the country. Opened in 1983,
it exhibits a large variety of indigenous and exotic cultivable fish as well
as ornamental pet fish. The three storied building displays around 70 varieties
of beautiful and unique fish with vibrant colours. It is open from 10:00 am
to 5:00 pm on all days except Mondays and second Tuesday of every month and
general holidays .
Shankara Foundation
Set up on two and a half acres of green plot on Kanakapura Road, Shankara is a
fascinating cultural centre for artists, artisans and art lovers. Founded
by renowned classical dancer Ms Rashmi Gopi Hegde, this recently established
foundation showcases craft melas, art exhibitions, regular classical performances
by renowned upcoming classical dancers, fusion groups etc. There is also a department
for children called 'Ranga Guccha' which was established for the benefit of rural
and urban children. Now the department hosts martial arts workshops, painting,
music, handicrafts, short-term courses in performing arts for children.
This foundation has an art studio, craft stalls, open-air
amphitheatre (Bhoomandala) and a lovely open air circular cafe Nakshatra (where
Indian food is served), decorated with lanterns and a contemporary art studio
(a place for those who wish to display their art work).
