Barnawapara Sanctuary

It is located in the northern part of Mahasamund district of Chattisgarh, at a distance of 85 km from the Raipur airport. It covers a relatively small area of 245 sq km and the topography comprises of flat and hilly terrain. The lush green vegetation of  the Sanctuary comprises of tropical dry deciduous forest flora which includes trees like Teak, Sal, Bamboo and Terminalia and plants like Seemal, Mahua, Ber and Tendu. The wildlife variety ranges from small animals like Sloth bear, Flying Squirrels, Jackals, Black Bucks, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Monkey to Four-horned Antelope, Leopards, Chinkara, Bison, Striped Hyena, Wild Dogs, Chital, Sambhar, Nilgai, Gaur, Wild Boar, Cobra, Python and Tiger. The bird population includes such members as Parrots, Bulbul, Peafowl, Woodpeckers, Egrets, Herons, White Rumped Vultures, Lesser Kestrels, Racket-tailed Drongos etc.

Best time to visit : November-June.
How to reach : The Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is easily approachable through the PWD forest road, which connects Barnawapara with Raipur via Patewa and with Pithora on NH 6.

Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary

Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Dhamtari district of Chattisgarh, at a distance of 173 km from Raipur. It covers an area of approximately 556 sq km and is comprised of highly undulating and hilly terrain. The sanctuary owes its name to the river Sitanadi which originates in the middle of the sanctuary and joins river Mahanadi near Deokhut. The flora here is composed of moist peninsular Sal, Teak and Bamboo forests and also Semal, Mahua, Ber and Tendu. The flora is composed of Tigers, Flying squirrels, Jackals, Four-horned antelopes, Chinkara, Black buck, Monkey, Porcupine, Wild Boar, Gaur, Nilgai, Sambar, Cobra and Python. The bird population includes Parrots, Bulbul, Peafowl, Crimson Breasted Barbet, Teetar, Tree Pie, Racket Tailed Drongos, Egrets, Herons etc.

Best time to visit : November-June
How to reach there : The nearest airport is Raipur and the nearest Railway Station is Dhamtari Railway Station (95 km). The place is easily approachable through the Raipur-Deobhog State Highway.

Udanti Sanctuary

Located in Raipur district, Udanti Sanctuary covers an area of 232 sq km. The sanctuary is made up of broken mass of land traversed by hill ranges and intercepted by stripes of plains. The Udanti river flowing from west to east covers a major part of the sanctuary and lends its name to the sanctuary. The Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the endangered Wild Buffalo population. The other members of the fauna are Panthers, Four-horned antelopes, Tigers, Chital, Chinkara, Black buck, Sambhar, Nilgai, Jungle cat, Barking deer, Sloth bear, Gaur, Wild dog, Monkeys, Jackals, Porcupine, Striped Hyena, Fox, Cobra, Python etc. The bird population includes Parrots, Bulbul, Peafowl, Racket -tailed Drongos,, Magpie robin, Egrets, Herons etc. The flora is composed of Tropical Dry Peninsular Sal forests and Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Mixed Forests.

Best time to visit :   November to June
How to reach :  The nearest airport is Raipur and the nearest railhead and bus stand is Rajim (115 km). It is easily approachable through the Raipur-Rajim-Gariaband-Mainpur-Deobhog PWD all weather road.

Bhoramdeo Sanctuary

One of the eleven wildlife sanctuaries of Chattisgarh, located in Kabirdham district at a distance of  140 km from Raipur and is named after the famous Bhoramdeo temples. The flora is composed of Sal, Saja, Teinsa, Kara and Haldu species. The fauna is made up of wild animals like leopard, hyena, fox, bear, cheetal, wild buffalo, nilgai etc. The river Sakari  which flows through the sanctuary is the source of drinking water for the wild animals.

Best time to visit : November to march
How to reach : The nearest town is Kawardha. It can be approached by road from Raipur(140 km).  Raipur is also the nearest airport.
